FAQs
What does perinatal mean?
The entire journey of bringing a new life into the world encompasses the moments both before and after a baby's arrival. It is a "window of opportunity" for families to bond and navigate one of life's most significant transitions. This period can start any time before and end anywhere from 18-24 months after birth!
What is a doula?
Think of a doula as your personal "birth bestie" or a professional companion for the wild, beautiful ride of bringing a baby into the world. While doctors and midwives are there to handle the medical side of things, a doula is there entirely for you—focusing on your heart, your comfort, and your confidence.
Why a doula?
Great question! Having a doula helps create a space for a birthing person where they feel heard and safe. Studies also show that people that use doulas are more likely to have a vaginal birth and less likely to have a medicated birth and ill feelings about birth!
Is a Doula really worth the cost?
Think of a doula as your "Birth Insurance." While you can’t control every outcome, having a doula is statistically proven to change the experience of birth. When you invest in a doula, you aren't just paying for someone to be in the room; you are investing in:
Better Outcomes: Studies (The "Doula Effect") show that families with doulas are 39% less likely to have a C-section and 15% more likely to have a spontaneous vaginal birth. However, your safety and your baby’s safety will always be my top priority when providing guidance and care!
Confidence for Partners: I take the pressure off your partner to be a "birth expert," allowing them to simply be your loving support system.
Reduced Interventions: With continuous support, the need for Pitocin and pain medication often decreases because you feel safer and more relaxed.
A Smoother Transition: Families with doulas report higher breastfeeding success and lower rates of postpartum mood disorders.

How far do you travel?
Bright Moon Perinatal Travel & Support Policy
To provide you with the most attentive and timely care, here’s how I approach travel and ongoing support:
Travel Distance & Arrival
My standard travel radius is approximately 1.5 hours (90 minutes) from your birth location.
I strive to arrive as quickly as possible once you notify me of labor, but please understand that traffic, weather, or other unforeseen delays may affect timing.
Early communication when labor begins or intensifies helps ensure I can be there when you need me most.
Backup Support
For rapid labors or unexpected delays, having a backup doula or trusted support person nearby is highly recommended. I’m happy to help connect you with experienced doulas in your area if desired.
Travel Fees
A travel fee applies for births located beyond a 45-minute radius of Grottoes, Virginia. This fee is either a flat rate of $50 or $25 per hour of travel time for journeys exceeding 60 minutes or 50 miles. The fee covers transportation expenses and the time dedicated to travel.
Travel fees will be discussed and agreed upon in more depth during our contract process.
Postpartum & Virtual Support
Postpartum visits are included in your package and can be scheduled in-person within 45 minutes or virtually if you are further away.
Virtual lactation and emotional support sessions are available to provide ongoing care, no matter where you are.
Communication & Planning
We will discuss your birth plan, contact preferences, and any special considerations during our prenatal meetings to ensure smooth coordination.
I’m always available for questions or adjustments as your needs evolve throughout your pregnancy and postpartum journey.
